The three layers of a moon placement
Most confusion in lunar astrology comes from these being discussed interchangeably. They are separate, and a full reading uses all three.

The moon moves roughly twelve to fifteen degrees a day. Its sign usually holds steady across a whole day, but its degree does not — and the degree is what fixes the house placement and every aspect. That is why a reading calculated without a birth time can tell you your moon sign and very little beyond it.
How to hold any of this
Astrological placements have not been shown to predict personality or events under controlled conditions, and the descriptions are broad enough that most people find something recognisable in several of them.
Astrology is most useful read as a vocabulary rather than a mechanism — a set of specific words for patterns of temperament that are otherwise hard to name. A description that gives you a better question about yourself has done its job. One that hands you a verdict has not.

What is a moon sign?
Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the moon occupied at the moment you were born. In astrology it describes emotional temperament — how you react, what you need to feel secure, and how you self-soothe — as distinct from the sun sign, which describes conscious identity and drive.
Why do people say the moon sign is more accurate than the sun sign?
Because it describes the private layer rather than the public one. Many people recognise themselves more in the moon sign description, which astrologers explain as the sun sign being how you present and the moon sign being how you actually operate when nobody is managing an impression.
Do I need my birth time to find my moon sign?
Usually not for the sign itself, since the moon stays in one sign for around two and a half days. You do need it if the moon changed sign on your birthday, and you need it for the degree, house placement and aspects — which is where most of the specific detail in a reading comes from.
What are the lunar nodes?
The north and south nodes are the two points where the moon's orbit crosses the plane of Earth's orbit around the sun. They are calculated points rather than physical objects, and in astrology they are read as an axis describing what is familiar and what is being moved toward.
What is the difference between a moon sign and a moon phase in a chart?
The sign is where in the zodiac the moon sat; the phase is how much of it was lit. They are independent — you can have a Cancer moon at any phase. The sign is read as emotional style, the phase as where you sit in a cycle of beginning and completing.
