A transit reading describes the current period. Neither is a prediction; both are interpretations laid over a calculation that is itself straightforward astronomy.

What a good reading does and does not do
Does: describe patterns in temperament, name things you had noticed but not worded, give you a vocabulary for how you handle feeling, and tell you plainly what it cannot determine.
Does not: predict specific events, make claims about health, pregnancy or death, tell you what someone else is thinking, or produce urgency about something only a further purchase can fix.
A reading has gone well if you leave with a better question about yourself than the one you arrived with. That is a low bar in one sense and a genuinely high one in another — and it is a fair standard to hold any reading to, free or paid.

What is a moon reading?
An interpretation of the moon's position — usually its zodiac sign and phase at the moment of your birth, sometimes its current position instead. Natal readings describe emotional temperament; transit readings describe a current period. Both are interpretations of a calculation, not predictions.
What do I need to get a moon reading?
Your birth date at minimum, and ideally your birth time and place. The sign can usually be determined from the date alone. The degree, house placement and aspects — where specific detail lives — require the time.
Are free moon readings accurate?
The calculation part is accurate: determining which sign the moon occupied is straightforward positional astronomy and free tools do it correctly. What follows is a general description of that placement rather than anything specific to your chart, which is fine as long as you know that is where the free version stops.
How do I know if a moon reading service is legitimate?
The most reliable single test is whether it asks for your birth time. A service producing a detailed personal reading from just a name and email is not calculating anything. Countdown timers, unskippable sales videos and predictions about health or money are the other clear warning signs.
