The moon changes zodiac sign roughly every two and a half days — twelve signs in about 27.3 days. Whichever sign it is in today is the same for everyone on the planet, and in astrological tradition it describes a passing emotional weather rather than anything about you personally.
That distinction is the one worth getting straight before anything else, because two quite different things go by the name "moon sign."
Two different moon signs
| Today's moon sign (transit) | Your moon sign (natal) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Where the moon is right now | Where the moon was when you were born |
| Changes | Every ~2.5 days | Never |
| Applies to | Everyone, simultaneously | Only you |
| Describes | Passing emotional tone | Emotional baseline and temperament |
| Needs | Today's date | Your birth date, time and place |
If you are trying to find your natal moon sign rather than today's, you need a birth chart calculation — the free moon sign finder at UnlockLuna (which we also run) will work it out from your birth details.
How to check today's
Any ephemeris, astrology app or almanac will show the current moon sign. One practical point: because the moon moves so fast, a source that only gives a date is not much use on a change day. Look for one that gives the time of the ingress — the moment the moon enters the new sign — because the morning and evening of the same day can differ.
The moon completes one circuit of the zodiac in about 27.3 days — the sidereal month. That is shorter than the 29.5-day cycle of phases, because the phase cycle also has to catch up with Earth's own movement around the sun. Those two numbers being different is why the moon's sign and its phase do not stay in step.
What each sign is said to bring
These are the traditional associations for the transiting moon. Read as descriptions of a passing tone, not instructions.
| Sign | Traditionally colors the day with | Said to suit |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Impatience, directness, quick starts and quick endings | Beginning things; short bursts |
| Taurus | Slowness, comfort-seeking, resistance to being hurried | Steady work; food; rest |
| Gemini | Restlessness, curiosity, scattered attention | Talking, reading, errands |
| Cancer | Sensitivity, nostalgia, a pull toward home | Domestic things; close company |
| Leo | Warmth, generosity, wanting to be seen | Creating; celebrating |
| Virgo | Precision, usefulness, a critical eye | Sorting, fixing, admin |
| Libra | Diplomacy, indecision, awareness of others | Conversations; smoothing things over |
| Scorpio | Intensity, privacy, an intolerance of surfaces | Deep work; difficult honesty |
| Sagittarius | Optimism, restlessness, wanting the bigger picture | Planning; learning; going out |
| Capricorn | Seriousness, endurance, focus on the practical | Long tasks; commitments |
| Aquarius | Detachment, perspective, sudden reframes | Problem-solving; groups |
| Pisces | Porousness, imagination, low definition | Rest, art, anything unstructured |
The shortcut: elements and modalities
Twelve descriptions is more than anyone remembers. Two groupings do most of the work.
Element — what kind of energy it is:
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) — outward, quick, warm
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) — practical, slow, physical
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) — mental, social, detached
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) — emotional, receptive, less defined
Modality — what it does with that energy:
- Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) — starts things
- Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) — holds things
- Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) — changes things
Combine the two and you have the sign's character without memorizing anything. A cardinal water moon starts emotional things; a fixed earth moon will not be moved.
The void of course moon
Between the moon's last major aspect in one sign and its entry into the next, it is described as void of course. The gap can be a few minutes or the better part of a day.
The old rule is that nothing begun on a void moon comes to anything. It is one of the more specific pieces of practical lore in astrology, and it is used more for scheduling than for prediction — avoid signing, launching or deciding; use it for routine work, tidying and rest.
Most ephemerides mark void periods, usually as "v/c". Whether you treat it as meaningful or as a curiosity, it is worth knowing what the abbreviation means when you see it.
Using it without over-using it
- Check it after, not before. The most honest way to test any of this: notice how a day went, then look up the sign. Checking first tells you what to look for and you will find it.
- Use it for scheduling, not for explaining. "The moon is in Virgo, good day for admin" is a harmless scheduling nudge. "I snapped at someone because the moon is in Aries" is an explanation that removes you from the picture.
- Watch for the sign your natal moon is in. Tradition holds the transiting moon returning to your natal sign — once a month — is more noticeable than the rest. It is the easiest claim in the system to check against your own experience.
- Do not let it make decisions. A framework for reflection is useful. A framework that decides for you has stopped being one.
Transiting moon sign has not been shown to predict mood or events under controlled conditions. The descriptions above are traditional associations — useful as a vocabulary for noticing how a day feels, not as a cause of it.

How often does the moon change signs?
About every two and a half days. The moon completes a full circuit of all twelve zodiac signs in roughly 27.3 days, which works out to approximately 2.27 days per sign. It is by far the fastest-moving body in a chart.
What is the difference between today's moon sign and my moon sign?
Today's moon sign is where the moon is right now, and it is the same for everyone on Earth. Your moon sign is where the moon was at the moment you were born, and it does not change. Transit readings describe a passing mood; the natal placement describes your baseline.
How do I find out what sign the moon is in today?
Any ephemeris or astrology app will show it, and most give the exact time the moon changes sign. Because the moon moves so quickly, check a source that gives times rather than just a date — on a change day the sign differs between morning and evening.
What does void of course moon mean?
The moon is void of course between its last major aspect in one sign and its entry into the next. It can last minutes or many hours. Traditionally it is considered a poor window for starting things or making binding decisions, and a reasonable one for routine tasks, rest and finishing what is already underway.
Does the moon's sign affect everyone the same way?
In the tradition, the transiting moon sign is described as a shared background color that everyone experiences, but how strongly it registers depends on your own chart. A transiting moon in the same sign as your natal moon, for example, is described as more noticeable than most.
Which moon sign is best for making decisions?
Traditionally the fixed signs — Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius — are associated with commitments that hold, and the cardinal signs with starting things. This is a symbolic framework for scheduling rather than a finding about outcomes.
