New Moon Reading Online is a reference library for lunar phases, astrology, symbolism and reflective practice. It is written and run by one person, and it is built on a single editorial rule: say plainly what is observable, say plainly what is symbolic, and never quietly blend the two.
Why it exists
My love of the moon began with my mom — the two of us looking up at the night sky together.
That is the whole origin, and it is worth saying because it explains the tone of everything here. I did not come to this through astrology, or through wanting to sell readings. I came to it from standing outside with someone I love, looking at something that changes shape every night and comes back on schedule.
Almost every culture that has looked up at the moon has read the same things into it — cycles, return, the hidden, time passing. That is not a coincidence between traditions. It is the most obvious reading of the object itself.
What sent me from looking to writing was how much bad moon content there is. Search almost any lunar question and you get one of two things: a page that treats symbolism as scientific fact, or a page that dismisses centuries of tradition as nonsense. Both leave you with less than you started with.
How this site handles that
Every guide here separates two things most moon writing merges. The astronomy gets stated as astronomy. The tradition gets stated as tradition. Where a lunar claim has been properly tested, I say what the testing found — including when the honest answer is that it did not hold up.
You will see this on the page as two different callout styles:
This style marks something observable, calculated or tested. Moonrise shifting about 50 minutes later each day. The 29.53-day synodic month. What a study actually found.
And this style marks symbolism, lore and interpretation — what people have long read into the moon. Worth knowing on its own terms, and not the same kind of claim as the one above.
The reason for the split is not to rank one above the other. It is so you can hold both without confusion, and decide for yourself what each one is worth to you. A tradition does not need to be scientifically true to be meaningful. It just should not be sold to you as though it were.
Who is writing this
My name is Laura Louise. I hold an M.A. in Educational Psychology and completed doctoral studies in Psychology of Education, and I have been building websites and writing online since 1999.
I am a teacher at heart, which is probably the most useful thing to know about how this site is written. My instinct with any subject is to work out what someone actually needs in order to understand it, then say that — without assuming prior knowledge and without padding. If a guide here starts by defining its terms, that is why.
I am not an astrologer and I do not present myself as one. I am someone who reads carefully, writes clearly, and is honest about the difference between what is known and what is believed.
How the site is supported
Writing this takes time, and the site is supported in three ways. I would rather list them plainly than have you work it out.

Commercial links are placed where they genuinely fit the topic rather than on every page, and any page carrying one says so. The guide to comparing moon readings online is fairly blunt about the warning signs in that industry, including on services I have no stake in. That felt more useful than being diplomatic.

There is one free email a week: where the moon is, what that phase has traditionally marked, and a short reading for every sign. One email, twelve signs, scroll to yours. You can sign up at the bottom of any page and leave whenever you like.
