The lunar nodes are the two points where the moon's orbit crosses the plane of Earth's orbit around the sun. That is the whole definition. They are not objects, not planets, and not anything with substance — they are intersections, in the same way the equator is a real feature of Earth with nothing physically there.
They are also the reason eclipses happen, which is a genuinely satisfying piece of astronomy and the part most astrological writing skips straight past.
Start with the tilt
If the moon orbited exactly in the plane of Earth's orbit, there would be a solar eclipse at every new moon and a lunar eclipse at every full moon. That plainly does not happen, and the reason is a tilt of about five degrees.
Because of that tilt, the moon spends roughly half of each month slightly above the plane of Earth's orbit and half slightly below. It crosses that plane exactly twice per orbit, at two points directly opposite one another.
- North node — where the moon crosses moving from below the plane to above it. Also called the ascending node, or in older texts the dragon's head.
- South node — where it crosses going the other way. The descending node, or dragon's tail.
The nodes do not stay put. They drift backward through the zodiac, completing a full circuit in about 18.6 years — roughly one and a half years per sign. Because they are opposite by definition, the north and south node are always exactly 180 degrees apart, and always in opposing signs.
Why this produces eclipses
An eclipse requires the sun, Earth and moon to line up almost exactly. Two conditions must be met at once:
- It must be a new moon (for a solar eclipse) or a full moon (for a lunar eclipse) — the moon has to be in line.
- The moon must be at or very near a node — so it is in the same plane, not five degrees off it.
Both conditions coincide during roughly two windows each year, several weeks long. That is what an eclipse season is, and it is why eclipses arrive in clusters rather than monthly.
The old names — dragon's head and dragon's tail — come from traditions in which eclipses were explained as a celestial dragon swallowing the sun or moon. The head and tail marked the two places where the swallowing could occur. As an explanation it is wrong, and as a description of where eclipses happen it is exactly right.
What the axis is read as meaning
Astrologically the nodes are treated as a single axis rather than two separate points, and the reading is built on the contrast between them.
South node — the practiced direction
Read as what already comes easily. Familiar strategies, well-worn competence, the default you reach for under pressure. In traditions that include past lives it is given that meaning; in ones that do not, it is read simply as deeply established pattern. The consistent theme is that it is comfortable and that comfort is the catch.
North node — the unpracticed direction
Read as the direction that does not come naturally and is described as where growth lies. Interpretations consistently note that it tends to feel awkward rather than exciting, precisely because there is no established habit behind it.
Because the two points are exactly opposite, the axis is not read as a choice between them but as a tension. The south node's skills are the ones you actually have. The reading is about not letting the fact that something is easy be the only reason you keep doing it.
The nodal return
Every 18.6 years the nodes come back to where they sat at your birth. That places nodal returns at roughly ages 18 to 19, 37, 56 and 74.
Astrologers treat these as periods where the axis becomes noticeable again. It is worth observing that those ages already sit near conventional life transitions in many cultures, which gives the framework a fairly generous target to hit — a point worth holding in mind rather than being persuaded by.
Finding yours
Any natal chart calculation will list the north node, usually with the symbol ☊. The south node is the same degree in the opposite sign, and many charts do not bother drawing it because its position is entirely determined by the other.
You will also see a choice between true node and mean node. The mean node is a smoothed average; the true node accounts for the moon's actual wobble. They differ by a degree or two and occasionally by a sign right at a boundary. Which one is used is convention rather than correctness.
The nodes are astronomically real and their positions are calculated precisely. What is not established is that they describe anything about a person's life direction — that is interpretive tradition, and it has not been tested successfully. The astronomy and the meaning are two separate claims and only one of them is verified.
