The short answer: no consistent effect of lunar phase on mood, energy or behavior has been found, despite the question being studied repeatedly across several decades and several fields. The one lunar effect that does appear real works through moonlight and sleep rather than through anything the moon does to us directly.
That is a genuinely disappointing answer if you were hoping for a yes, so it is worth going through carefully — including why the belief is so durable, which turns out to be the more interesting part.
Where the belief comes from
It is old enough to be baked into the language. Lunatic comes from the Latin luna, and the idea that the moon disturbed the mind was taken seriously in European medicine and law for centuries — English legal statutes once distinguished between the permanently insane and "lunatics" whose condition was understood to fluctuate with the moon.
It survives most strongly in professions that work nights. Ask nurses, police officers, paramedics or bartenders whether full moons are busier and a large majority will say yes, often emphatically. That consistency is exactly why the question got studied properly.
What has been tested
This is one of the better-studied folk beliefs, because the data needed to check it already exists. Hospitals, police forces and emergency services keep dated records, and the moon phase for any date is known precisely. You do not need to run an experiment — you can go back through decades of records and count.
That has been done for:
- Psychiatric hospital admissions
- Emergency department visits and trauma admissions
- Crime rates and police call volume
- Births and onset of labor
- Seizure frequency
- Self-reported mood and psychological symptoms
Individual studies point in various directions, which is what you expect from noise. Reviews that pool many studies together have generally found no consistent lunar effect across any of these categories. Where a single study reports one, larger follow-ups have typically not reproduced it.
The gravity explanation, and why it fails
The most common proposed mechanism is that since the moon moves the tides and the human body is mostly water, it must move us too. It is an appealing argument and it does not work.
Tides are not caused by the moon lifting water. They are caused by a difference in gravitational pull across a very large distance — the moon tugs marginally harder on the ocean nearest it than on the ocean on the far side of the planet, and that small difference accumulates across thousands of kilometres of connected water until it becomes a visible bulge.
Across the height of a human body, the moon's differential pull is smaller than the gravitational effect of a large building standing next to you. There is no accumulation, because a body is not a connected basin thousands of kilometres wide. The water-in-the-body argument mistakes the total force for the differential one.

The one effect that does hold up
Here is where it gets interesting, because the folklore may have been pointing at something real while getting the cause wrong.
A 2021 study tracked sleep across three Indigenous Argentine communities with differing access to electric light, plus a group of university students in a large US city. In all of them, people went to sleep later and slept less in the three to five nights before the full moon — stronger where there was no electricity, but present everywhere.
The timing is the clue. Moonrise shifts about 50 minutes later each day, so the nights of maximum evening moonlight are the ones just before the full moon, not the full moon itself. A bright evening keeps people up a little longer, in the same way any other light source would.
Centuries of people noticing something around the full moon, and the thing they were noticing may have been that it was too bright to go to bed. That is a smaller claim than the folklore made — and a more satisfying one, because it means the observation was good and only the explanation was wrong.

Why the belief persists anyway
Given how consistently the testing comes back negative, the durability of the belief needs explaining. Four things do most of the work:
- The full moon is the only nameable phase. You know when it is full. You have no idea when it is a waning gibbous. Only one night a month is even available for attribution.
- Memorable nights get filed; ordinary ones do not. A chaotic shift on a full moon becomes a story. A chaotic shift on an unremarkable Thursday becomes nothing.
- Confirmation runs one way. Nobody checks the moon phase after a quiet night. The belief is only ever tested when it appears to be confirmed.
- The belief is shared. Which brings us to the part that may be genuinely real.
"Collective energy" and shared expectation
People often describe a full moon as changing the mood of a room, a ward or a whole town — something collective rather than personal. There is no lunar mechanism for that. But there may be a social one.
If everyone on a shift believes full moons are chaotic, several things follow. Staff are more alert and more likely to interpret ordinary events as unusual. Anticipation raises the general tension. Stories get told during the shift, reinforcing it. And people behave differently when they expect a difficult night.
A shared expectation can genuinely change how a group behaves and how it remembers the evening afterward. That is a documented social phenomenon rather than a lunar one — but it means the experience people describe can be real even when its stated cause is not.
Using the phases anyway
None of this makes working with the lunar cycle pointless. It changes what you are claiming.

- Use it as a check-in prompt. The full moon is an unmissable monthly reminder to ask how you are actually doing.
- Deal with the light. If your sleep is disturbed around the full moon, that is the one place a real intervention exists: close the curtains properly.
- Track blind, check later. Log mood and sleep for two or three months without looking at phases, then compare. It is the only way to find out whether anything holds for you — and the log is worth keeping regardless of the answer.
- Keep the symbolism as symbolism. The traditional meanings of the phases are worth knowing on their own terms. They just are not describing a force.
If your mood, energy or sleep shifts in ways that feel significant — whether or not they seem to follow any cycle — that is worth raising with a doctor. Real cyclical patterns in mood do exist and have nothing to do with the moon, and they are much better addressed by someone who can actually look at them with you.
